Fri 29 Aug
Ellen Allien (Germany)

Another heavyweight in the thriving Berlin scene, Ellen Allien has been an underground commodity for the last 15 years. But with the mounting success of her Bpitch Control label, she has finally claimed the throne as the first lady of techno. With 3 artist albums, 2 compilations, her own record label, a clothing line, and several boxes full of 12” releases to her name, Ellen is one of the very few forward thinking DJs that has fused music, art and fashion. Behind the decks, expect everything from minimal, glitchy electro and spacey atmospherics, to a heads down hands-in-the-air techno hoedown. Be prepared.

Seb Fontaine (UK)

With a series of best-selling 'Prototype' mix CDs under his belt, four years on Radio 1’s legendary Saturday night slot, and residencies at two UK super clubs, Seb clearly belongs among the elite of international DJs. Seb has been a part of ‘it’ for nearly 20 years now. His career choice may not seem surprising when you allow that he was conceived on the island of Ibiza, but it’s his affability, modesty and sense of perspective that really sets him apart from the competition. Seb’s relentless mission to continue to push the dirty, chunky, funky house sound is what makes his club nights so special.

Saturdays at Velvet Underground with Hong
Saturday 6, 13 Sep 2008 at Velvet Underground

Add a dose of versatility with a dollop of talent, mix well with an innate ability to drop the funkiest tracks at the most opportune time and you have a taster of DJ Hong. Hong’s foray in music started with none other than Zouk a decade ago, after a break to pursue other interests, it didn’t take long for the allure of bright (strobe) lights and big city (tunes) to prove too much for him to bear. Here’s where the story ends and his love affair with dance music and Zouk begins again. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Karizma and Theo Parrish and always an impact maker, this after dark veteran has won numerous hearts and ears at various clubs and bars with his sonic feast of house, techno, electro, disco and what not....resistance is futile.

Balearic Thursdays
Thursdays at Velvet Underground

The style of music and djing that inspired Zouk in the early years and the foundation of a continued open-minded approach to music nearly 2 decade’s later, is none other than the influential Balearic sound of the early 90’s.

Embraced by Ibizan locals as a healthy disrespect to style conformity, its freestyle expression was adopted by DJs Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling and Trevor Fung after holidaying there and became a phenomenon in the UK via their respective club nights.

Deft and clever programming of fusing cutting edge house music with fun and unexpected bursts of soul, funk, pop and Rock remix oddities, the likes of The Stone Roses, St. Ettiene, James Brown and Peter Gabriel, it spelt good times all night.

Velvet Underground’s Balearic Thursdays is like going back to the clubs roots, a spirited time, playing a spectrum of fun and vibrant music and reminiscing and re-discovering all those tunes that made the party and caused dancefloor mayhem throughout Zouk’s three rooms, 1991 right up till today.

Zouk alumnae rejoice and fresh clubbers feel the vibe that started it all, right in time for fashion and music’s resurgent love affair with all things 90’s.
